I have been running the race ever since the first annual. Micheal was a really nice boy and my family and I miss him a lot. I hope that we find a cure for cancer and I will be participating in the race until we do!

This is my first year running this road race. I also attend Tom DeFranzo's Martial Arts Acadamy and when my teacher told me about the race I wanted to be involved. My closest cousin was diognosed with a very rare disease that has no cure. At one point we thought that we were going to loose Shannon. Shannon is still with us today because of research and treatment that Childrens Hospital has provided. I think it is very important to raise money for cancer or any disease because one day I hope that they will find a cure. My goal someday is to become a medical researcher to help find cures for childhood diseases.

Looking through old folders and papers from teaching the other day, I came across a poem Michael wrote for me. Michael knew how much I love poetry -- reading, writing and sharing poems. He also knew of my love of gardening. His poem combined both loves. He wrote of colorful flowers. I'm always thinking of him and his "colorful" life -- filled with such loving family and friends. He was such a love and is surely missed.
See you on May 1st for road race.

Dear Friends,
Just a short while ago, my brother, PJ Dunleavy traveled to our hometown of Doolin, County Clare, Ireland. He went to attend the second annual Michael J Dunleavy five mile walk, starting at The Russell Cultural Centre, taking a scenic route around Doolin, and finishing back at the centre.
The event was named, 'Walk the roads of Doolin for Michael'. Participants traveled from far and near to attend, and show their support. After the walk several musicians entertained, for the enjoyment of all present. Light refreshments were served, by the hard working volunteer staff. We are extremely grateful to the Russell centre committee, for allowing the building, to be used for this event.
To date, this event has collected over twenty thousand Euros, which will be distributed in Michael’s memory, by the Irish Cancer Society to the Children’s hospital in Crumlin. None of this would be possible without the dedication and hard work, of our family and friends, in Ireland. Countless hours were given by the committee, arranging the event. The large amount of money collected, in this small community, is a testimony to the hard work, of the committee, pledge card holders, and the generosity of people in general, when asked to sponsor such a worthy cause. Local business owners donated money, prizes, food, to name just a few items. Garda, (police) ambulance, and rescue personnel donated their time and services. A representative from the Irish Cancer Society was on hand, to provide support in any way possible. Friends helped with crowd control, amplification, hall set up, and various chores, too many to mention. Local and national press provided excellent coverage of the event, at no charge, and with help, from Michael, the weather cooperated.
Toni and I would like to say a huge “THANK YOU” to everybody involved in this event. It is impossible to name everyone individually, but please know, we are humbled by the kindness and generosity expressed, on our behalf. To date, fund raising in the US and Ireland, has raised approximately, two hundred thousand dollars , in cash and donations, for The Michael Dunleavy Foundation. Hopefully these fundraising efforts will help in finding a cure for this terrible disease. See photo's of this event on the website.
Sincerely
Gerry & Toni Dunleavy

Dear Friends,
We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone who helped in organizing the Second Annual Michael Dunleavy 5K Walk & Road Race.
Sunday, May 23 was a great success. Hundreds of people took time out of their busy lives to gather at the Vinson-Owen Elementary School to honor the memory of our son, Michael J. Dunleavy.

The principal, staff, parents and children of the Vinson-Owen School, the event committee, and the event volunteer staff, who put in a lot of time and hard work to put this all together, we sincerely appreciate it.
The town of Winchester and town officials, for giving us permission to hold the event. The local police and emergency staff for keeping everyone safe during the event.
Local stores, people of Winchester, and surrounding towns, who donated generous cash and prize donations, and those who donated food and refreshments, for the event staff and participants.

We walked as a family today, thinking about the strength that it takes for the Dunleavy's to organize this event. It is, perhaps, the only event in Winchester where an entire family can come together for a purpose where the sum
is greater than the individual parts. You make us all remember how lucky we are and grateful we should be. Siochan leat.

Dear Gerry & Toni,
I happened upon this site through a search of mgh. I have to commend you on how much you have accomplished as a tribute to your beautiful Michael! I lost my 12 yr. old son Stephen this past August to a brain stem glioma. He was diagnosed in the beginning of October 2002. He was also treated at Mass General. My husband and I are also looking into setting up a foundation but we haven't gotten very far with things yet. What you are doing and have already done is amazing!

The event was named, 'Walk the road to Doolin for Michael'. Participants traveled from far and near to attend, and show their support. After the walk several musicians entertained, for the enjoyment of all present. Light refreshments were served, by the hard working volunteer staff. We are extremely grateful to the Russell centre committee, for allowing the installation of a plaque in Michael's memory, and for the use of the building, during the event.

Our Sincere Thanks!!!
Sunday, April 13th 2003 was a day to remember. The weather cooperated and thousands of people took time out of their busy lives to gather at the Vinson-Owen Elementary School, to honor the memory of our son, Michael Dunleavy.
An idea spawned by the teachers and staff at the school became a reality and left a memorable mark on the community.
The reason for the success of this event was the outpouring of support by people too numerous to mention. In general, a huge thank you goes out to the following:
The principal, staff, parents and children of the Vinson-Owen School, the event committee, and the event volunteer staff.
The residents who cheered the participants, and provided refreshments, along the run/walk route. The town of Winchester officials,Police and Fire departments. The staff and students of various schools in Winchester. Our son John, and Tina for their wonderful singing, of our national anthem. The DJ and emcee, corporate and private sponsors, and people who made monetary, or prize donations. Various media outlets, print and radio, Web site management, printers, and PR spokespeople.
The local “Merchants for Michael” who opened their stores on Sunday and donated a portion of the sales to the foundation.
Our numerous friends who contributed in so many ways to the success of this event and especially to the participants who’s enthusiastic endorsement of the first annual Michael J. Dunleavy walk/road race gives us the drive to continue the fund-raising efforts started by Michael two weeks before his passing.
And our various family members for their love and support.
The event grossed approximately $85,000 for the foundation. Please continue to check our web site for more pictures and updates on upcoming events.

Gerry, Toni and Family. What a great Tribute to your son Michael. I know he's looking down from Heaven and very happy to have such a loving family and many wonderful and caring and supportive friends attend the first annual road race. No wonder the sun poured so brightly and the day warmed up. Michael was truly there as an angel with all of us. Being neighbors of yours for a few years I'll always remember Michaels bright smile and how John took to his little brother. Though his life was short you all have many good memories of both Winchester and Maine and the impact Michael left on so many lives that he touched. My daughter Beth loved babysitting for him and would always come home from Maine telling me about the lemonade stand and the fun times at the Beach with both the Dunleavey and Baxter children. What an inspiration....Your in our prayers and our hearts always.

To all the Dunleavys:
Thank you for creating this site that reflects so beautifully both on Michael's bright spirit and on the spirit of your family. You, Gerry, must know with what affection and growing pride we have watched you since the spring of '87 when we first met. Your wedding to Toni, the arrival of John with that light all around him, the arrival of Michael and the three others each in their turn - all were still ahead of you then. How great that you organized this event, which we hear was wildly successful. We were away, and so missed both it and this radio show too, which sounds as if it was very powerful. You are so often in our thoughts...And wouldn't your dad have been proud - mustn't YOUR parents be proud, Toni, to see the way you both have labored to set aside your own sorrow long enough to have done this fine thing, establishing a foundation in Michael's name.
I keep my eyes peeled for you every time I am downtown, Gerry. Saw you on the street earlier this year, and executed a fast - and highly illegal - U-turn to try to catch you, but you must have ducked into some storefront...
May spring's tender return soothe instead of wound you further, reminding you of all that death does not - cannot - conquer.
With our love,
Terry and David Marotta, Carrie, Annie and Michael

Today i ran the first Michael j.Dunleavy race. I want to be an oncologist and found this story extremely touching. i have always wanted to specialize in leukemia but today i thought about brain cancer for the first time. It is something we need to research. Families should not have to go through the loss of a son or daughter or a brother or sister. I know feel ready to fight cancer and do away with this awful disease. it is time to treat this thing.

On my recent birthday on 3/19, it was the second anniversary of losing my best friend and sister in law to a brain tumor. Mr & Mrs Dunleavy, you sound like two of the most amazing people I've ever heard! Michael must've been a great kid (as I'm sure all yours are) with parents like you. I heard you on Barnicle's show this morning. I was out walking with my headphones on, and I was crying the whole time! My son was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 2 and endured 25 months of chemo and radiation. As a parent, I sympathize with your ordeal, but cannot imagine the pain of your loss. Your faith and strength are inspiring. Best of luck with the foundation, and may God bless you. I just wanted to tell you how much your story affected me today. Thank you.

Michael, On what would have been your 9th birthday, I look at your picture and your laughter fills my heart. You would be proud of your Mom and Dad - they are very strong and have shown many people what love is all about. I'm happy for the times we spent together at school - your spirit and courage will not be forgotten. Love, Diane

Our son Michael Leahy attended kindergarten at Tara Montessori with Michael during 2000/2001. Michael remembers him being the funniest kid in the class and loved the idea that they both had similar names. While we were overwhelmed with sadness at Michael's funeral, and his name was being announced at Michael James Boyne Dunleavy, we had to smile when our son Michael turned to me and said "Mom, his real name is Michael James Bond Dunleavy". We thought that summed it all up. Michael was a very special boy and we are glad his spirit will live on through this wonderful family.

We sat today (Friday,Feb.28) as a class and took a look at the website of our classmate Michael Dunleavy. We loved seeing our class song Seasons of Love on the website. We really liked all of the pictures and the clippings of work that he did at Vinson Owen Elementary School. We wish that he was still with us but at least he will always be a part of our hearts. We now know that this will be a very special place to go to on the website.
p.s. See you at the road race (We can't wait!)
